Langley Celebrates Sherman Arts Center Groundbreaking
Wednesday, May 09, 2007
On Tuesday, April 24, The Langley School celebrated the official groundbreaking for its Jeffrey J. Sherman Arts Center. Named in honor of Jeff Sherman, the school’s former Board president and long-time parent who passed away in 2005, the building will elevate the arts programs at Langley and will provide a central gathering space for the entire school community.
Jeff Sherman’s wife and two daughters -- Emily '02 and Eliza '05 -- joined school administrators, past Heads of School Betty Brown and Lucy Daoust, current and former parents, alumni, and students for the ceremonial “dig” at the construction site on campus. Students from each grade then placed photos, stories, artwork, and their Langley memories in a time capsule which will be on display in the new building and opened on Langley’s 100thanniversary in 2042.
With a 350-seat auditorium with state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting, a spacious lobby area for art displays and student lunches, and band, music, and art rooms, the Sherman Center will give Langley students of all ages a place to rehearse, perform, create, and grow. The building is scheduled to open in the spring of 2008.
